In 2005 NICE rejected 2 brain tumour therapies on the basis of cost. In order to increase the awareness of the need for these treatments a Brain Tumour Patient Group Consortium was developed, for whom we managed the PR activities. We conducted comprehensive research which identified how this decision put the UK even further out of line with the rest of Europe in terms of cancer care. This was an important message for the media campaign.
A series of case studies were provided to the media to highlight the plight of those suffering (which we were responsible for sourcing and interviewing).
The campaign was intensive with various outputs including: A day of radio interviews which reached a total of 320,000 listeners; Weekly press releases / case studies which were picked up by national television and radio stations including Channel 4 News, BBC News 24, The Today Programme, Daily Mail, Daily Express and Sunday Times; As well as case studies and patient groups we also engaged with clinicians who were able to provide positive comment supporting the efficacy of both treatments. 36 of whom signed a letter to the Secretary of State for Health objecting to NICE’s recommendations.
NICE made an eventual U‐turn.
